It was wonderful to have Sabrina Crawley as our guest speaker last week. She gave a very passionate talk on “Ethical Clothing” regarding the local and international clothing industries. Like most of you, when I see “Made in Australia”, I assume it is made with ethics as an important component. I was really surprised to know that most of the Textile, Clothing and Footwear industries in Australia are still using workers who make garments from home and often these people are not paid fairly by their contractors/sub-contractors. Not only that, they often miss out on some basic entitlements.

Sabrina works at Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA) and helps these workers and promotes ethical working conditions throughout the supply chain for factory workers and home- workers.

She also briefly talked about the factory disaster in Bangladesh where more than 3000 people died due to poor working environment/conditions. My best wishes to Sabrina and her team for doing a great job which will help many more people in future and many workers will be treated fairly.

On Monday, 14th April, we had our Board meeting. We had discussions on different issues, initiatives, goals and projects including the Community Awards night, local and international projects etc. I want to thank Jama Farah and PDG John Davis for all their hard work and preparation for the Community Award night to be held on 1st May, 2014. Ros Casey from Victoria University came to our board meeting and discussed about a possible joint art show between RC of Footscray and Victoria University in 2016. This joint project would help the artists within our community and strengthen the ties between Victoria University and the Rotary Club of Footscray. It will also be a great opportunity to promote our club within the community. I want to thank past president Maria Silber and Ros Casey for their initiatives and hard work. I am looking forward to hearing more from them in near future.

Also note that on our Community Awards night, partners, relatives and friends are more than welcome to attend.

Please enjoy your week, stay connected and let's together reshape our society, our world better.

Regards,
Ejanul
