Ejanul's message, 29 May 2014

I am looking forward to welcoming our AG Peter Harris to our club on Thursday (29.5.2014). This will be his last official visit to our club for this Rotary year. I enjoyed working with him throughout the year and I sincerely appreciate his help, advice and continual support. With his leadership, we built three toilet blocks in Bangladesh for school kids, this year alone.

On Tuesday (27.05.2014) I attended the funeral of Ken Miller, a proud member of our club, along with many of our club members. I extended my sincere condolences on behalf of our club to Beth, Anne, Peter and their extended family members. We, the members and friends of the Rotary Club of Footscray, will miss our dearest friend Ken and our prayers will always be with him and his family. He joined our club in 1971 and has been an active member of the club over four decades of membership. He has been a Board member and chaired several committees including Membership, Youth activities and International. Ken as membership chair in the 1980-81 Rotary year brought 15 new members into the club, most likely still the highest number in any one Rotary year. Ken was recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow in the 1994-95 year for his services to the club and the wider community. Recently he was also awarded “Legend of Footscray Rotary Club” for his service over 40 years.

It was good to hear from our guest speaker Michael Wells about “Shine for Kids- help for children with parent involved in criminal justice”, last week. It was great to know about SHINE for Kids and its support to the community. “SHINE for Kids assists and supports children of prisoners to develop coping mechanisms and provides opportunities for these children to support each other. It supports those kids and helps create hope and inspires them to reach their potential. It nurtures their growth and empowers them to succeed.”

On Thursday morning (22.5.2014) Rodney, Graeme and myself met with Joanna Attard from Maribyrnong city council to discuss and finalise the project location for Bike Shed. At this stage, it will be a temporary project to run in conjunction with Refugee Week (June 15-21). Council will provide a location for the project at Mills Cross, Footscray for four months and we have to organise the equipment required to repair the bikes and need to provide the man power. Rodney already sent you the details of this project. This will provide us an opportunity to work on a project for the community and will give us greater access to it.

On Thursday evening (22.5.2014) I represented our club at Citizenship Ceremony at City of Maribyrnong with Fred Maddern and George Kerry (Jnr). Mayor Cr Grant Miles gave the certificates to nearly 80 new citizens, in two different sessions, who have now joined our great Australian family and pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people. I welcomed the new citizens by handing out the trees and Australian flags. I talked to few new citizens after the ceremony and they shared their journey and experiences. It was good to talk to them and share my own journey as well.

I am looking forward to attending the Rotary International Convention-2014, Sydney from June 1-4. This will be my first Rotary International Convention and Anar and Ryan will also be joining me for this event. We all are very excited and hope to meet with many Rotarians there.

Please stay connected and let's together reshape our society, our world better.

Regards,
