Angus' Message, 10 September 2015

Dear Rotarians & Friends,

Last Thursday’s meeting was an evening meeting and unfortunately I was absent due to a prior commitment that I probably should never have made! 4400 kilometres in 5 days was like going on a Red ex Rally. We drove through New South Wales, South Australia and finally Queensland where our destination was Birdsville and the famous Birdsville Cup.

At the Cup, it was great to see evidence of Rotary work being done. The Flying Doctors’ marquee was staffed by volunteers and they were selling bottles of water for $3 a bottle. The bottles were branded with our Rotary International logo. A volunteer I spoke to had travelled 1300kms at his own expense to support Rotary and yet he was not a Rotarian. This type of generosity is admirable.

The cup was an eye opener and apart from it being a great social event over two days for the local farmers, it attracts a huge number of campers and four wheel drive enthusiasts. Whilst driving back to Melbourne it brought to reality how big and beautiful this country is with an abundance of kangaroos, emus, wild goats and pigs greeting me on my drive.

I would like to acknowledge Kevin Field for being my stand-in President whilst I was away; his help in doing my job was most appreciated.

This Thursday’s lunchtime meeting will have Joe Eidelson as our guest speaker talking about the recording of family histories. This should be a very interesting topic and reminds of the reality TV series, ‘Where Do You Think You Come From?’. I know that I have a very interesting family tree going back to a King!

Wilson, our Treasurer has emailed/mailed subscriptions for the coming year. Please act promptly as payment comes with an early bird discount.

I’m looking forward to regaining my role as your President.

Best wishes,

Angus Scott-Walker
