Dear Rotarians and Friends

November is Rotary Foundation Month

The last week has been a hectic one in more ways than I could imagine. On Wednesday evening Kathy and I attended the Welcome Dinner organised for the World President elect of Rotary International, John Germ. It was a great evening with our District Governor, Julie Mason doing a Question and Answer session with John. We also met during the evening a few Rotarians who have invited us to their Clubs.

The evening recognised outstanding contributions to the Rotary Ideals including District 9800 ( Peace Builder District) Roger Leask (Royce Abbey Award) and Gordon McKern (Foundation Citation for Meritorious Services).

The following evening, we had in conjunction with Western Health, our Annual Fund raising evening with guest speaker Professor Jeremy Oats (RC Of Melbourne) who spoke about Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity and Australian Statistics vs Timor Leste.

We were initially given a potted history lesson on Timor followed by an overview of the professor’s work in leading teams to educate midwives and doctors in improving outcomes for mothers and babies.

We then enjoyed a magnificent meal and entertainment from Nicholas Jones from Opera Australia who excelled in his performance singing to us. The evening would not have been made possible without the tireless work and worry of our PP Graeme Thompson. Also my thanks to PP Bob Newman for being Master of Ceremonies and everyone else who set up the venue and who deconstructed it at the end of the evening.

I must also acknowledge the generosity of Tony Schevello who donated the superb wine we enjoyed on the evening. I would also like to thank Vincent Verduci for being instrumental in organising Tony’s most generous gift. It was unfortunate that Tony was unable to join us.

On Sunday of this week, Brad Sleurink, Maria Silber and myself will be attending the Youth Exchange Blazer Presentation and Din- ner at International House where we will enjoy the company of Malena Catto our Exchange student who will be going to Austria next year.
