Graeme's Message, 26 February 2015

Dear Rotarians and friends

At the February Board meeting we considered a couple of important issues.

It was resolved that we proceed with an application to Rotary Foundation for a District Grant – International to support the planned Dental Health project at Brightside school in Ethiopia. This project originated from an approach from the Ethiopian Community via Jama Farah to Dr Jamie Robertson. Jamie and a colleague went to Ethiopia to assess the needs and made recommendations to solve poor dental health in the school. The main thrust of the program will be to educate students on the value of cleaning teeth on a regular basis and making this a part of the daily activity of a school day and providing brushes and toothpaste for a period of two years.

To do this, construction of sinks will be required and with the falling Australian dollar, the cost has increased to $10,000 an increase in the initial estimate of the contribution required from the club. The Board has nevertheless resolved to fund the project. The local Ethiopian Community has agreed to make a contribution.

We hope that with a contribution from Foundation the project can come to fruition. It will be necessary for a further visit once the infrastructure is completed to establish the education program. The teaching staff at Brightside will be fundamental to the sustainability of the project.

In this Rotary month of “World Understanding” this project is an example of our club gaining “understanding” of a problem remote from Australia and “acting” upon it.

Over a number of years, our club has maintained four Breathometers at various venues. The maintenance of these machines has become expensive and the Board has resolved to offer for sale these machines to the venues.

As the centenary of ANZAC approaches the Board also resolved to have a special meeting on April 23rd to mark this significant event and recognise our members who are ex-servicemen.

Also in April, on Monday the 20th, is another important club event, the Golf Day at Medway Golf Club.

Ron Hunt has been working hard on sponsorship. If you are a golfer put the date in your diary.
