Dear Rotarians and friends,,

Last week we heard that the District Foundation Committee had granted a District International Grant for the Ethiopian Dental Project that Jamie Robertson had proposed, following a visit to Brightside School near Addis Ababa. This is a simple health prevention project aimed at improving oral health with education and regular brushing of teeth at school. The Grant is valued at $5500, and between the Club and the Ethiopian Community, a further $11000 is required to fund the project.. Foundation also contributed to the initial planning visit.

The “Diabetes Support Project” also received funding from Foundation.

So we have done well with allocations from Foundation for our projects in the last eighteen months and this reinforces the value of our annual contribution. We have committed to $5000 again this year including $1000 as a specific donation to “End Polio Now”.

It is an opportune time to remind you of the possibility of making a personal gift to Foundation. This is possible through the EREY program. Only three of our members are involved in this program and I encourage you to give some thought to becoming involved as the end of the financial year approaches. If you want more information let me know.

The “Rotary Club of Footscray Community Service and House of Friendship Fund Inc” is currently considering applications for grants. There are requests for financial assistance for a diverse range of projects. Thanks to the wise stewardship by the Club in the 1970’s, we are in the fortunate position of being able to make significant contributions to many of these worthwhile local projects.

At the Board meeting on Monday evening, we discussed the Margaret and Lawrence Atley Scholarship. To date this has been a music award but at the request of Lawrence and Margaret, this year the focus will be public speaking. Local schools will be asked to nominate a candidate to speak for 5 minutes on a specific topic concerning Rotary. The competition will be held at an evening meeting, possibly in August.

A reminder that we are holding a special ANZAC commemoration at our lunchtime meeting on April 23rd. I encourage you all to make an effort to attend. We will be joined by friends from Probus.

Regards

Graeme
